Hoodie vs sweatshirt: which should you buy this winter?
November aa gaya, and the evenings have started to feel different. Before the proper cold arrives, most of us ask the same question: hoodie loon ya sweatshirt? They look similar and do a similar job, but they suit different days and different people. This simple guide will help you pick the right one, or decide if you need both.
What is the difference between a hoodie and a sweatshirt?
The main difference is the hood. A sweatshirt is a pullover with a round crew neck and a clean, simple look. A hoodie adds a hood, usually with a drawstring, and pullover styles often have a front pocket as well.
The warmth of the fabric depends on the material, not on the name. At Panuwear, both are made from the same 300 GSM fleece, so the sweatshirt is not a lighter version of the hoodie. The hood is what gives you extra cover.
What does 300 GSM mean for winter?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It tells you how heavy a fabric is, and a higher number generally means a thicker fabric. For comparison, our regular T-shirts are 180 GSM and our oversized tees are 240 GSM. At 300 GSM, a hoodie or sweatshirt has noticeably more body, which makes it a good choice for cool days and winter evenings.
GSM is only a guide, though. How warm you feel also depends on your city, the wind and what you wear underneath.
When to choose a hoodie
Pick a hoodie if you want a little extra protection from the weather:
- Morning rides and evening walks: the hood helps when a cold breeze hits your neck and ears.
- Pahadi trips: the weather can change quickly in the hills, so a hood is handy to have.
- Travel: on a chilly train or long bus journey, pull up the hood and get comfortable.
- A relaxed, street-style look: a hoodie instantly feels casual, and it works well with joggers or cargos.
When to choose a sweatshirt
Pick a sweatshirt if you prefer something cleaner and easier to layer:
- College and casual office days: a crew neck looks a little neater, especially with jeans or chinos.
- Layering under a jacket: without a hood, there is no extra fabric bunching up at your neck.
- A collar peeking out: wear a shirt underneath and let the collar show for a smart winter look.
- Bold prints: the simple shape keeps attention on the design.
Quick comparison by weather
- Mild evenings: either one on its own over a light tee. A sweatshirt feels a little less fussy.
- Cold and windy days: a hoodie, because the hood gives you more cover.
- Proper North Indian winter: don’t depend on one layer. Wear a thermal or tee underneath, a hoodie or sweatshirt in the middle, and a jacket on top.
- Snowy hill trips: treat either one as a mid-layer, not as your only protection. Carry a proper outer jacket as well.
How to get the size right
Think about how you plan to wear it before you order. If it will be your outer layer over a T-shirt, your usual size is a sensible place to start. If you want to wear thicker layers underneath, or you like a roomier fit, consider going one size up. Always check the size chart on the product page instead of guessing, because a few minutes with a measuring tape can save you the trouble of a wrong fit.
Want something of your own?
If you can’t find a print that feels like you, make one. You can add your own line or photo to a design-your-own hoodie or a design-your-own sweatshirt. It works well for a college group, a family trip or a winter gift for your favourite person. Just note that cash on delivery isn’t available on design-your-own items, so these need to be paid for online.
Good to know before you order
- Designs are DTG printed.
- Orders ship in 2–3 working days, and delivery usually takes 5–7 working days.

So, which one should you buy?
Choose a hoodie for wind, travel and a relaxed look. Choose a sweatshirt for layering and a neater everyday style. And if you will be wearing one almost every day this winter, having one of each isn’t a bad idea. Sardi lambi hai, options rakhne mein kya harz hai?
